Read up on important updates & changes coming to our collegiate programs & branding. These changes will take place starting the 2021 calendar year.

This year has been filled with numerous challenges, successes, and most of all, change. We’ve been working actively behind the scenes to set the foundation for what our collegiate programming will be in light of all of this. First and foremost, we are retiring the Tespa brand, and shifting our branding to focus more on the game franchises that our players are most excited for. Secondly, as we continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on live events, we are cancelling our Chapter Programming. Lastly, we’re going to focus our efforts on online programs, with the goal of continuing to develop the collegiate esports space.

Sunsetting our Chapter Program

Our chapter programs have been a pillar of the collegiate esports experience for many students across North America, and we’re proud of the achievements of our chapter leaders. 2020 has brought numerous challenges to the table, many of them heavily impacting our chapter program. With live events on an indefinite hold due to COVID-19, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel all of our chapter programming until further notice. This includes Chapter Councils, Meetups, and all Event Support (Campaign Support, Tabling Kits, & Side Quests). We want to stress that this decision was not taken lightly, and we thought a lot about potential solutions that would allow us to continue supporting chapters during this time. We’re thankful for all of the amazing events and experiences we were able to create together, and hope to come back to these programs when the time is right.

Evolving our Collegiate Branding

The Tespa name has been there with us from the beginning. Not many may have realized it, but Tespa actually represented the starting point of our collegiate journey, as the Texas E-Sports Association! A lot of time has passed since Tespa first formed in 2013, and we’ve grown and learned a lot (like how it should be spelled “esports”). While we still have a lot of love for the Tespa name, it just doesn’t capture the scale that we’ve grown to.

We want to use that momentum to help guide our focus as we move into 2021. Our Competitive programs around these beloved franchises are unique in many ways, and we want to embrace them as a resource to help bring more people (especially students) into the collegiate esports ecosystem. Starting in 2021, we will no longer be using the Tespa brand for our programs, and will continue to evolve our Overwatch, Hearthstone, and Call of Duty collegiate programs to focus on the franchises that our students continue to be passionate about!

Changing our Platform Accounts

This year we’ve had the opportunity to generate more awareness around our programs by working directly with our Blizzard Esports teams. We’ve created collegiate-specific pages on the Overwatch League, Call of Duty League, and Hearthstone websites! We’re excited for the opportunity to utilize these platforms to continue to expand the reach of our programs. Starting 2021, we’ll be closing down the Tespa website and using our franchise-dedicated web pages to provide key updates to our players on all things related to our competitions. We’ll also be sunsetting our Tespa twitter account and transitioning all program updates to live under the Overwatch Path to Pro and Hearthstone Esports twitter accounts respectively. Our Compete Discord Server will still be active for all of our online competitive tournaments which will still be operating, so make sure you're in the server if you aren't already!

Looking at 2021 and Beyond

Our vision isn’t changing - we believe in the power of gaming as a force for good, and want to bring people together through meaningful experiences. Our collegiate competitions will be continuing this Spring, and we can’t wait to share those announcements with everyone, along with some other secrets we have in store! We’ll still be active on our Tespa channels until the end of this year, so stay tuned, and don’t forget to stay in touch with our new socials as we enter the new year.

GLHF, and we’ll see you soon. Light the Flame
